The Challenge

A visiting health care professional
- Highlight their changing culture.
- Examine patient experience.
- Challenge thinking.
- Encourage freedom and creativity.
Selecting and Using The Tools
Discussion
After meeting the trust and discussing their concerns, we agreed to create a short performance piece for the AGM - A Theatre in Business approach
The performance should tell the story of a parent of a child with disabilities who feels she is pushed 'from pillar to post' between health care professionals. It should be amusing and fun.
Research
We talked to health care professionals with experience in this field, field workers from voluntary organisations, and asked parents to share their experiences in telephone interviews.
Performance
We used parents' words and experiences to create From Pillar to Post the story of Mary Jones' journey with her son Jamie from initial diagnosis to her current role advising parents in a similar situation. All the professionals she encountered on her journey were presented through her eyes, which allowed for a lot of laughter.
Benefits
'You were able to open up a difficult area with sensitivity and
humour'
Chair
Chair
- Increased awareness of patients' perception of professional practice.
- Opened the way for discussion of behaviours and potential to change.
- Opportunity to identify good practice.
- Allowed the audience to share patients experience and their own reaction to it.
